Liposuction – remove unwanted fat and safely shape your body with a plastic surgeon
Liposuction
Liposuction is an effective method for removing fat that cannot be reduced through diet and exercise. At Nordstrandklinikken , the procedure Nordstrandklinikken by experienced plastic surgeons who create natural and harmonious results.
Practical information
Many people want to tone and shape their bodies, but find that certain areas of fat cannot be exercised away. With liposuction, the surgeon permanently removes fat cells to achieve a more defined and balanced body shape.
What is liposuction?
Many people have unwanted fat that they want to get rid of. Some areas are difficult to exercise away, and unfortunate fat deposits can be due to lifestyle, hereditary or hormonal factors. Liposuction is not an alternative to dieting, but is very suitable for areas with localized fat deposits that cannot be removed, and to bring out underlying contours.
We use all methods of liposuction. The most common is traditional liposuction, which uses different types of cannulas, shapes, and sizes with suction. This procedure is usually performed under anesthesia and is suitable for removing larger amounts of fat, but also for contouring.
See the separate page on SmartLipo and laser liposuction, which is a gentler technique for removing fat. This can be done while awake with pain medication or under sedation, and recovery is quick. This procedure is most often suitable for smaller areas and smaller fat deposits, or areas with fat that is harder and more difficult to remove with traditional liposuction. Another advantage is that it can gently tighten the skin afterwards if there is loose skin.
Is liposuction permanent?
People are born with a certain number of fat cells on their bodies, and these are distributed differently between individuals and between women and men. For example, men tend to store fat on their stomachs, while women store it on their stomachs, hips, and Breast. When you lose weight, the fat cells contain less fat, but there are still the same number of fat cells.
During liposuction, fat cells are permanently removed from an area where you want less fat, and if you maintain the same weight after the operation, the results will be permanent.
Can fat return to areas where liposuction has been performed?
If you maintain the same weight, the result should be stable. However, if you gain weight and continue to eat as before, the excess energy will be stored as fat, but to a greater extent in other areas. It will be stored both in the areas where you have had liposuction, as there will always be some fat cells left under the skin, but to a much greater extent in other areas. You will therefore gain more weight in areas other than where you had liposuction, but also a little in the areas where you had liposuction if you gain weight afterwards.

The abdomen is the most common area for liposuction. Dr. Vigen is interested in body contouring surgery and 3D liposuction/high definition lipo, and is familiar with techniques for bringing out underlying and more athletic contours. There are many differences between the anatomy of women and men that are important to consider when performing liposuction, such as which fat to remove and which to preserve in different areas.
If there is loose skin (on the stomach), there may be more loose skin after liposuction, and the procedure should then be combined with abdominoplasty(either full or mini abdominoplasty) or another tightening treatment.
There are specific rules that we follow regarding how to liposuction women and men in order to bring out feminine and masculine shapes, respectively.
Liposuction in women
When performing liposuction on women, the aim is to achieve an hourglass figure, with a focus on contouring the waist and hips. In women, liposuction is often combined with fat transfer in order to preserve the fat and use it to create more feminine shapes in Breast, face, buttocks, or hips (hip dips). It is popular to move fat from one area to another, such as from the stomach and waist to Breast.
Liposuction for men
The stomach and waist are areas that are genetically difficult to slim down and where men often store fat. They are therefore the most common areas for liposuction in men, as they usually want to reveal athletic contours from their abdominal muscles and get rid of their "love handles." Many men have more or less fat on Breast sometimes a feminine shape and some glandular tissue, so in cases of gynecomastia or simple fat deposits on Breast , it Breast a common area to perform liposuction to remove fat and improve the contour of the pectoralis muscle.
If there are signs of gynecomastia and glandular development, this can be removed through a small incision at the nipple at the same time.
Remove skin or not at the same time as liposuction?
It is often quite obvious whether to choose one or the other, but sometimes it becomes a matter of judgment whether to perform plastic surgery and remove skin, where the scars are placed in a less visible area and sutured using plastic surgery techniques, or whether there is not so much skin that scars are desirable, and it is preferable to have a few small incisions. It is important that the surgeon has experience with all methods and is not just proficient in one method. You should talk to the plastic surgeon during the consultation and look at many before and after pictures of both types of procedures and similar problems so that you know what to expect.
What is included in the price?
The price you pay for an operation includes all follow-up checks you would need after an operation. We are available to all our patients and want them to have the safest experience throughout the entire process.
If you smoke or use snuff, you must stop doing so 2-3 weeks before the operation, depending on the type of operation you are undergoing.
As with any major surgery, all medications and supplements that increase the risk of bleeding should be stopped 2 weeks before the operation. See our list of medications and supplements to avoid. As always, be sure to check with your doctor before stopping any medications.
The week you are scheduled for surgery, it is important that you are healthy. If you have any symptoms of illness, you must contact the clinic so that we can schedule a new date. Surgery should not be performed when you have symptoms of illness. Before surgery, you will be given a prescription for medication, with information about which tablets to take.
On the day of the operation, you must fast for 6 hours before the operation. It is also important that you do not chew gum or lozenges, use snuff or smoke. You should not use perfume, deodorant or makeup—and piercings and nail polish must be removed.
It is always a priority for us that you feel well cared for with the very best expertise, in safe and comfortable surroundings. You will be welcomed by a nurse who will go through a checklist with you. You will also meet our anesthesia staff who will look after you during the operation. You will then see the surgeon for registration and a preoperative consultation. During the operation, you will be given anesthesia and a large amount of local anesthetic to limit the pain. The operation itself takes about 1-2 hours. After the operation, you will be monitored by our nurses, and you will remain in the recovery room for at least 1 hour after the operation is complete. You will be given food, drink, and painkillers as needed.
During the first 24 hours after surgery, you must be accompanied by another person and stay overnight near the clinic. If you have any questions, our on-call telephone service is available around the clock. On the evening of the surgery, our plastic surgeon will also call patients to check on their progress and provide any information they may need.
In terms of pain, this varies greatly from person to person. Initially, you will feel a little "bruised." This will subside during the first week. It is also common for anesthetic fluid to leak from the small incisions during the first 24 hours. You can shower after 4 days. The tape on the wound can then be dried with a hair dryer. This tape can be changed for the first time after about 10-12 days. You may experience some swelling for 1-2 months. During this time, you can also take painkillers that are prescribed before the operation. After a week, you can move around more, but you should still take it easy for the first two weeks and avoid heavy lifting.
For most people, the skin retracts nicely after liposuction, but if you have a lot of excess skin, you should consider undergoing body contouring surgery at the same time. See our separate articles on this topic. During your consultation, an experienced plastic surgeon will assess what is best in your case.
After the operation, compression garments must be worn around the clock for 2-3 weeks and for the same amount of time during the day thereafter, depending on the area that has undergone liposuction. This ensures a more even result and prevents fluid accumulation. There are small incisions with stitches that fall out on their own.
Compression garments
At Nordstrandklinikken we have compression garments from Nordicare available for purchase at the clinic if you wish. The clinic coordinator is trained in measuring and all Nordicare products, so that you get the best possible compression in the garments after surgery.
