Arm lift in Oslo – firmer and smoother upper arms with natural results
Upper arm lift (arm lift)
Arm lift removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms for a firmer, smoother, and more harmonious contour. The procedure provides natural results and can be combined with laser liposuction for extra tightening.
Practical information
Arm lift surgery is performed to reduce excess skin and fat deposits on the upper arms – often referred to as “bat wings.” On this page, you can read about different methods, how the surgery is performed, and what you can expect before and after the procedure.
What is arm plastic surgery?
Some people have a lot of fat on their upper arms and want liposuction, some have a lot of excess skin and want correction of loose skin, and others have a combination.
Excess skin on the inside of the arms ("bat wings") is common, and many people want to have liposuction and tightening of the upper arms. Some people find it difficult to wear short sleeves or summer dresses because they find this uncomfortable and unsightly.
What methods are available?
Most often, it is a combination of excess skin and fat. There are several methods, both different methods of liposuction and different methods of tightening the skin, surgical and non-surgical, and what is best in each case should be clarified with the surgeon during a consultation.
Excess fat can be removed through weight loss and exercise, or liposuction for areas that are resistant to this. If there is excess skin, this cannot be exercised away.
Liposuction
In minor cases of excess skin, liposuction of the upper arm may be sufficient, as the skin will retract somewhat. Keep in mind that liposuction can result in looser skin, and if there is more skin, surgical intervention should be performed, which will leave a fine scar on the inside of the upper arm. This is known as upper arm plastic surgery, which removes skin from the upper arms.
Laser liposuction
Laser liposuction not only breaks down fat but also tightens the skin at the same time. It is suitable for those with little to moderate excess skin. The laser fiber performs liposuction and tightens the skin at the same time. This is a gentler technique and can also be performed under local anesthesia.
Arm plastic surgery
During arm lift surgery, a scar is made from just above the elbow on the inside of the arm up to the armpit to remove excess skin. These scars are barely visible and are located on the inside of the arm. Due to liposuction, more skin can be removed than before. A method is used to test how much skin can be safely removed, and this is then removed before the skin is sutured in several layers with self-dissolving thread and a compression arm sleeve is applied to prevent swelling as much as possible. After the procedure, you will rest in the recovery room and be given food and drink until you go home. The procedure is performed on people with a BMI of 28 or less, as a higher BMI leaves a risk of complications. For higher BMIs, only upper arm liposuction is performed. It is not possible to perform arm plastic surgery without leaving scars. The scars are located on the inside of the arm and are often red at first, but they fade and soften over time and become less visible.
Non-surgical methods
There are some non-surgical methods for tightening the upper arms, such as Bodytite, Renuvion, Argon plasma, and laser treatments from the inside or outside. The results are somewhat more unpredictable as it is not known in advance how much tightening will occur, but these methods improve and tighten the upper arms without leaving scars.
Surgery and anesthesia
Anesthesia
During arm lift surgery, you will be given a light anesthetic, and after applying a generous amount of anesthetic, we will remove the excess skin on the inside of your upper arm and tighten the skin at the same time.
Liposuction
Liposuction is performed using thin cannulas, which give an even result around the arm. Several layers of stitches are used, which dissolve on their own and leave a thin strip of scarring.
What is included in the price?
The price you pay for an operation includes all follow-up checks you would need after an operation. We are available to all our patients and want them to have the safest experience throughout the entire process.
As with any major surgery, all medications and supplements that increase the risk of bleeding should be stopped 2 weeks before the operation. See our list of medications and supplements to avoid. As always, be sure to check with your doctor before stopping any medications.
If you smoke or use snuff, you must stop doing so 6-8 weeks before the operation, depending on the type of operation you are undergoing.
Blood-thinning medication, anti-inflammatory medication, and salicylic acid preparations must not be used 7 days prior to surgery.
The week you are scheduled to have surgery, it is important that you are healthy. If you have symptoms of illness, you must contact the clinic so that we can schedule a new date. Surgery should not be performed when you have symptoms of illness.
Before the operation, you will be given a prescription for medication, with information about which tablets to take.
On the day of the operation, you must fast for 6 hours before the operation. It is also important that you do not chew gum or lozenges, use snuff or smoke. You should not use perfume, deodorant or makeup—and piercings and nail polish must be removed.
It is always a priority for us that you feel well cared for with the very best expertise, in safe and comfortable surroundings. You will be welcomed by a nurse who will go through a checklist with you. You will also meet our anesthesia staff who will look after you during the operation. You will then see the surgeon for a preoperative consultation. During the operation, you will be given anesthesia and a large amount of local anesthetic to limit the pain.
The operation itself takes approximately 2-3 hours.
After the operation, you will be monitored by our nurses, and you will remain in bed for at least one hour after the operation is complete. You will be given food, drink, and pain relief as needed.
After the procedure, the area is bandaged with Micropore tape, a sterile bandage, and a compression stocking.
You can shower after 4 days and remove the bandages, but not the paper tape over the wound itself. It is normal for there to be some bleeding in the sock and for the wound to ooze a little during the first week. Dry the tape with a hair dryer before putting the socks back on.
It is sewn with internal stitches that dissolve themselves after 3-6 months.
After one week, you will have a check-up at the clinic. After one week, you can move around more, but you should still take it easy for the first two weeks and avoid heavy lifting for the first four weeks. You should wear compression garments around the clock for three weeks and during the daytime for another three weeks. Taping should be continued as long as the scars are red and for at least 3-4 months.
Compression garments
At Nordstrandklinikken we have compression garments from Nordicare available for purchase at the clinic if you wish. The clinic coordinator is trained in measuring and all Nordicare products, so that you get the best possible compression in the garments after surgery.
