Scar correction with laser treatment and microneedling
The treatment used will depend on the appearance of the scar. For minor procedures such as this, we usually conduct the consultation and perform the surgery or treatment on the same day.
How is it done?
In surgical scar correction, the scar is surgically removed and re-stitched using plastic surgery techniques. This will leave a scar that will become less noticeable over time. Surgical scar correction is usually performed under local anesthesia.
We place the stitches in layers – both under the skin to hold the wound together and give a nicer scar, and intracutaneously to avoid marks from the stitches. The stitches are placed parallel to the skin's natural wrinkles and folds. They are concealed as well as possible by placing them in areas where they are not very visible. The stitches under the skin dissolve by themselves after three to six months.
Removal of scars with laser treatment and microneedling
Scars that cannot be significantly improved by surgery, either because they are very narrow or punctiform, or because they cover a large area that cannot be removed and sutured, can be treated with laser therapy or microneedling to try to make them less visible. The way it works is that small holes are made in the scar using fractional laser or microneedling, and then skin cells from the surrounding skin grow into the holes. The scar will thus be replaced by skin in parts of it and become slightly less visible over time. The scar will not disappear, but it will be much less visible.
This treatment often needs to be repeated several times until sufficient improvement is seen. During the consultation, we will assess the best treatment for correcting your scar.
