Skin that loses firmness, elasticity, and structure is one of the most common reasons why patients seek aesthetic treatments. Whether it is the stomach, arms, thighs, neck, or back, skin laxity can occur after weight loss, aging, pregnancy, or due to genetic factors. Traditionally, surgical skin tightening procedures have been the standard treatment, but this often involves larger incisions, scars, longer downtime, and more obvious risks.

What is Renuvion®?

Renuvion® (formerly known as J-Plasma) represents a new generation of skin tightening – and Nordstrandklinikken among the first clinics in Norway to offer this technology. This enables us to give patients results that previously required far more invasive surgery, particularly in areas where scarring is undesirable, such as the back, thighs, arms, and flanks, but also on the neck or after liposuction in general, for tighter skin and higher definition (high-definition lipo).

Renuvion is an advanced energy-based technology that combines radio frequency (RF) with controlled helium plasma to tighten skin and stimulate collagen. The technique is performed using a thin probe that is inserted under the skin through small incisions (often only a few millimeters), making it a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery.

How does it work?

  • Helium gas is heated by radio frequency and forms a precise plasma stream.
  • The plasma stream heats up the connective tissue directly under the skin in a targeted manner.
  • The collagen fibers contract immediately.
  • Over the next few months, new collagen production is stimulated, resulting in gradual and natural skin tightening.

This combination makes Renuvion powerful, precise, and gentle. Its high precision allows the surgeon to target areas where other technologies have limited effectiveness, such as the armpits, stomach folds, flanks, knees, or lower abdomen after childbirth.

Who is Renuvion suitable for?

Renuvion is designed for patients who want to improve skin firmness without undergoing major surgery.

It is particularly well suited for:

  • People with loose or slightly to moderately loose skin who do not want scars
  • Patients who have undergone weight loss and have excess skin but do not want long scars. They can also be used for shorter scars in combination with plastic surgery, for example arm lift without scars or with short scars, thigh lift without scars or with short scars, or tummy tuck with short scars and skin tightening on the flanks and back for skin tightening and better transition.
  • Women who want to tighten their skin after pregnancy
  • People who feel that their skin does not tighten after fat removal
  • Patients who want better definition in areas such as the stomach, waist, arms, or back
Those who want a shorter downtime than with surgical skin removal

Important: Renuvion is not a liposuction alternative in itself, but can provide significantly tighter contours when combined with liposuction (more on that later).

Treatment Areas

Renuvion can be used on most areas where the skin has lost elasticity. The most common are:

Stomach and waist

One of the most popular areas. Particularly effective after pregnancy, weight loss, or when the skin does not contract after liposuction.

Arms (upper arms/skin folds)

Gives you tighter upper arms without the long scar that comes with arm lift surgery (brachioplasty).

Neck and chin

Can give a more defined jawline and tighter skin under the chin, often combined with liposuction.

Back and bra line

Effective for small pockets of fat and loose skin on the back folds.

Inside and outside of thighs

Well suited for skin that is thin and losing structure.

Knees

One of the most difficult areas to treat with traditional methods – Renuvion has particularly good results here.

What can Renuvion be combined with?

For optimal skin tightening, Renuvion is often most effective as a combination treatment.

These are the most common combinations:

1. Renuvion + Liposuction

This is the most sought-after combination, and the one that gives the best overall results in patients who have both excess fat and loose skin.

Advantages:

  • Liposuction removes fat and shapes the area.
  • Renuvion tightens the skin from the inside where the fat tissue is removed.
  • Provides more defined contours.
  • Reduces the risk of loose or uneven skin after liposuction.

Particularly suitable for the stomach, waist, arms, and chin/neck.

2. Renuvion + BodyTite / Vaser Lipo

(Some clinics use these – here we must write in general terms:)

If the patient is already a candidate for energy-based liposuction (e.g., Vaser), Renuvion provides an additional tightening effect afterwards. They work on two different layers of tissue and can provide a more defined and long-lasting result.

3. Renuvion as follow-up after weight loss

For patients who have lost weight, the skin can become so loose that surgery is the only option. However, for anyone in the mild to moderate skin laxity category, Renuvion may be a non-surgical alternative.

This applies in particular to:

  • Stomach
  • Flanks
  • Back fat folds
  • Arms
  • Inner thighs

4. Renuvion + surgery (selected as needed)

In some cases, Renuvion is used as a supplement to surgical procedures such as:

  • Mini tummy tuck
  • Arm plastic surgery
  • Breast lift (for fine-tuning the contour in transition zones)
  • Thigh lift

It is not used as the main treatment for large areas of excess skin, but as a reinforcing effect in the surrounding area or to create shorter scars.

How does the treatment work?

1. Consultation

At Nordstrandklinikken , we Nordstrandklinikken great emphasis on individual assessment. The surgeon examines the skin, fatty tissue, elasticity, lifestyle, medical history, and expectations. The following is then assessed:

  • Whether Renuvion alone is sufficient
  • Combination with liposuction recommended
  • How many areas to treat
  • Realistic results based on skin quality

2. Treatment day

As a rule:

  • Local anesthesia or general anesthesia – depending on the area and combination
  • Small incisions of 2–3 mm
  • Liposuction (if selected)
  • Renuvion probe is inserted and treats the tissue in controlled "strokes"
  • The incisions are taped and compression garments are applied.

Duration: 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on scope.

After treatment

Downtime

Renuvion alone:

  • Soreness for 3–5 days
  • Swelling 1–2 weeks
  • Most return to work within 3–7 days

Combined with liposuction:

  • More swelling and tenderness
  • Compression garments for 3–6 weeks
  • Training after 3–6 weeks

Results

  • Immediate skin contraction right after the procedure
  • Visible results after 3–6 weeks
  • Full effect after 6–9 months when collagen has built up

Advantages of Renuvion

  • Minimally invasive
  • Small incisions – almost invisible scars
  • Faster healing than surgical skin removal
  • Precise heat delivery – protects surrounding tissue
  • Can combine liposuction and tightening in the same procedure
  • Delivers results that previously required major surgery
  • Natural contours and long-lasting effect

Are there any risks?

As with all energy-based surgery, there are risks, but Renuvion has a good safety profile when performed by experienced surgeons. Possible side effects:

  • Swelling
  • Bruises
  • Temporary numbness
  • Tenderness in the tissue
  • Unevenness if the patient does not use compression correctly
  • Infection (rare)

The surgeon will review all aspects during the consultation.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Does it hurt?

Most people describe the treatment as relatively painless. Local anesthesia is used for smaller areas, while general anesthesia is used for larger areas.

How long do the results last?

The results are long-lasting. The skin's natural aging process continues, but Renuvion provides strong collagen stimulation that lasts over time.

Am I a candidate?

If you have mild to moderate loose skin – yes. For more severe cases, surgery is recommended.

How quickly will I see results?

Some tightening immediately. Full effect after 6–9 months.
