Loose skin and bags under the eyes – get a fresher and more alert look
Lower eyelid surgery
The treatment reduces bags and excess skin under the eyes and gives a more alert and balanced appearance. The procedure is performed with precision and minimal scarring.
Practical information
With age, the skin under the eyes loses elasticity, and bags or loose skin can give a tired and older appearance. Surgical intervention or laser treatment can give a natural, refreshed result.
Loose skin and bags under the eyes
Over time, many people develop loose skin and bags under their eyes. This is normal and often does not require treatment, but for many people it can make them look tired, worn out and unwell. Many people come to us to correct this and look like a better version of themselves. For some, it is only loose skin that needs tightening, either in the form of a small incision under the hair on the lower eyelid to remove excess skin, or by using a CO2 laser if there is less skin.
In some cases, the skin is quite tight, but there is a bag under the eyes and a dip just below. This makes you a good candidate for removing the fat pockets from the inside without scarring, a procedure known as transconjunctival surgery. An incision is made in the crease on the inside of the eye, and the fat that is closest to the surface is removed. We usually combine this with CO2 laser treatment from the outside, which leaves no visible scars.
Another issue is the hollow that appears on the lower side and the transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek. Sometimes, when there is a bag above, it is possible to remove some of it and push the rest, or transpose some of the fat down onto this hollow, but in some cases, fat grafting or a little filler is needed to fill this area. When fillers are used, this is called treatment of "tear through," which refers to the hollow that develops under the eye over time. Fillers or fat grafting can be used to correct this. During surgery, fat is available for use and often provides the best long-term results.
In some cases, all of these changes are present at the same time: loose skin, bags, and hollows under the eyes. In such cases, a classic lower eyelid operation is usually performed, involving the removal of skin and bags and, if necessary, the transposition of fat.
During a consultation, you can discuss which solution is best for you: non-surgical with fillers and laser, or surgical. You can also see many before and after photos of patients whom Dr. Vigen has operated on and approved.
Avoid blood-thinning medication, smoking, and snuff 1–2 weeks before the operation.
The surgeon makes an individual assessment to tailor the method and result.
The procedure usually takes 1–1.5 hours and is performed under local anesthesia.
You can go home the same day.
Swelling and bruising are common for 7–10 days.
You should sleep with your head elevated and avoid exercise for at least one week.
