Abdominoplasty is more than just cosmetic surgery—it's about function, comfort, and balance. At Nordstrandklinikken , the procedure Nordstrandklinikken by specialists who combine safety, precision, and natural results.

What is abdominoplasty?

During abdominoplasty (also known as a tummy tuck), the skin on the abdomen is tightened and excess skin is removed through an incision along the bikini line. The procedure is often combined with liposuction of the abdomen and waist for a better figure. The procedure is most common after weight loss or pregnancy, where the abdominal muscles may be separated, and they are sewn back together to achieve a tight abdominal wall.

In a full tummy tuck, all the skin is tightened up to the chest, while in a mini tummy tuck, only the skin below the navel is tightened. The procedure leaves a scar along the edge of the underwear, and it is important to plan and mark the scar well in advance so that it is as low as possible and below the edge of the underwear or bikini. This will fade and become less and less visible during the first year.

There are also non-surgical methods for tightening the stomach, including Fotona T-runner, which we offer, as well as other methods. For an assessment of this, please contact us using the contact form.

Before and after pictures

For before and after photos, you must come in for a non-binding consultation to see the results of others who have undergone surgery and approved this. At the consultation, we will determine whether you are suitable for surgery and provide recommendations and advice, and see what can be achieved based on your wishes.

The procedure begins with liposuction of the entire abdomen and waist to achieve the best possible shape and contour. An incision is then made along the edge of the panty line and excess skin is removed. In most cases, the abdominal muscles are also tightened. Sometimes, when the skin's elasticity is preserved and not too saggy, the problem can be solved by liposuction or the SmartLipo technique alone, which can also pull the skin back somewhat, but in most cases, especially when there is loose skin, a better result is achieved with abdominoplasty. Full abdominoplasty with suturing of the abdominal muscles is also recommended, especially if the abdominal wall is loose due to rectus diastasis (split abdominal muscles). It is also possible to suture the diastasis only in the lower part with a mini tummy tuck, but in cases of diastasis, it is recommended to perform a full tummy tuck and suture the abdominal muscles together all the way, otherwise some of the tissue behind may push upwards.

Some people have been overweight and, after losing weight, are left with unsightly skin and fat hanging over the waistband of their pants. You can exercise away fat, but you cannot exercise away excess skin. For many people, this area can also be particularly difficult to exercise. If you have physical discomfort due to excess skin and meet the criteria for surgery in the public health system, the procedures can be performed VAT-free.

Can be combined with other procedures

We usually perform tummy tucks in combination with liposuction. It can also be combined with other procedures, such as a so-called "mommy makeover," which involves performing a full or mini tummy tuck and inserting breast implants at the same time. In some cases, a mini tummy tuck is sufficient, where the navel is not moved and only the lower area is removed, while a full tummy tuck tightens all the way up to the sternum and a new navel is created. It is also possible to combine a tummy tuck with a buttock lift (known as a lower body lift) or with a BBL and 360-degree liposuction. In many cases, however, it is better to do one thing at a time so as not to prolong the operation time, which increases the risk of blood clots and other disadvantages.

What happens to your stomach during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles move to the side to make room for the uterus and baby, and after birth, the abdominal muscles usually come back together. It is common for there to be a small gap between the abdominal muscles after childbirth, and this usually does not require any treatment. However, in some cases, it can cause either physical or psychological discomfort with a bulging abdominal wall because the abdominal muscles do not come back together afterwards. This is called rectus diastasis ("split abdominal muscles") and is most common in women who have given birth to several children. It can lead to a bulging abdominal wall, but also back pain because there is a lack of support from the muscles in front. Many people who have a loose abdominal wall (which cannot be trained back into shape) and a lack of support from the abdominal wall in front (which sometimes causes back pain) can be corrected by sewing them back together during surgery ("rafing"). In many cases, we also do this mainly to achieve a narrower waist and a more cosmetically pleasing result. Many people also say that after the operation, they experience less back pain, which they did not know was related to this.

There are various methods, and during the consultation, the plastic surgeon will determine which method is best suited for you, the degree of excess skin, whether there is rectus diastasis, assess your weight and BMI (body mass index), whether there is a need for further weight loss before the procedure, the need for liposuction, the placement of the navel, and the incision.

Lower body lift (bodylift)

In a lower body lift, a buttock lift is performed first, followed by an abdominoplasty during the same operation. The patient starts in a prone position, and the buttocks are lifted first to achieve more projection and a better shape. This results in a curved scar across each buttock, known as a "butterfly scar." This is a different procedure from a BBL (Brazilian butt lift), where fat is injected. See the separate article on buttock lift for more information. However, fat can be injected instead if there is no sagging of the buttocks but you want to use the fat liposuctioned from the abdomen to create more projection at the back (BBL). After the procedure on the back, you turn over and a tummy tuck is performed.

Body weight and BMI

The ideal BMI for abdominoplasty is below 28, but we also operate on patients with a BMI of 30-32 if they have no other risk factors. For higher BMIs, it is advisable to lose more weight in order to achieve a satisfactory result. In such cases, we recommend that you work with your surgeon to develop a diet and exercise plan to determine the best time for surgery.
