When your skin turns 50

When your skin turns 50

Is it too late once you're over 50?

Once we pass the age of 50, many of us begin to notice signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Some people develop what many refer to as "frown lines," which are lines between the eyebrows. Lines and wrinkles come with age, and our skin ages just as we do.

Is it too late to start taking care of your skin once you're over 50? The answer is: No, it's not. There are several treatments that are well suited to this skin type, depending on your starting point and what you want to work on.

When you reach menopause, the production of collagen and elastin changes.

What happens to your skin when you turn 50?

  • Less collagen and elastin are produced, and they are broken down more quickly. This can result in loss of volume and thinner, more fragile skin.
  • Pigment changes and blood vessels may also become more prominent, in addition to wrinkles and lines. Skin renewal slows down, and the formation and shedding of skin cells occurs more slowly than before. This is often characterized by the skin retaining its tan longer after sun exposure, for example.
  • Water loss from the skin also increases, contributing to drier and more sensitive skin.

Treat the skin

Good treatments for maintaining your collagen and elastin are microneedling with Dermapen, as well as a chemical peel that stimulates the regeneration of healthy skin cells and helps them reach the skin's surface more quickly. Fotona 5D is a laser treatment that also contributes to increased collagen formation, tissue tightening, and reduction of lines and wrinkles.

Lines and wrinkles can also be effectively reduced with Restylane fillers or anti-wrinkle injections. A classic Restylane filler can restore the fullness you once had or have always wanted, while a Restylane Skinbooster treatment hydrates the skin from within and naturally plumps it over time. Pigment treatment can consist of, for example, laser treatment or chemical peels. You can also work on skin texture, pigmentation, and lines over time with customized products in a home program.

Regardless of what you choose to do at the clinic, there are three products you should have at home on your bathroom shelf. These are a cream containing vitamin A (e.g. retinol, retinal, retinyl palmitate), a serum containing antioxidants, and a UV factor.

Menopause

After menopause, male sex hormones become more dominant as estrogen levels drop, which can result in increased sebum production and adult acne. Retinol reduces this sebum production and is therefore beneficial. Retinol also has a documented effect on signs of aging, giving the skin a glow, reducing pigmentation, and strengthening the skin barrier when used over time.

Antioxidants also combat signs of aging by reducing the breakdown of collagen and elastin, in addition to having many other benefits such as reducing pigmentation, inflammation, and redness in the skin.

The last and perhaps most important product is a UV factor that protects the skin from UV damage and signs of aging. Use this all year round, regardless of the weather outside. UVA rays are present even when the sun is not shining.

In other words, it is not too late to start using skin-preserving treatments and products after the age of 50. If you are unsure about what is best for you, please contact us and we can tailor a program for you.
