Thigh lift – remove excess skin and tighten your thighs safely with a plastic surgeon
Thigh lift
Thigh lift removes excess skin and tightens the inner thighs for a firmer and smoother result. The procedure gives a harmonious and natural shape, especially after weight loss.
Practical information
After significant weight loss or age-related changes, the skin on the thighs can lose elasticity and become saggy. Thigh lift surgery removes excess skin and tightens the area, giving the thighs a firmer and more balanced contour.
What is thigh plastic surgery?
Thigh lift surgery is a procedure that corrects loose and excess skin on the inner thighs. The procedure is most common after weight loss and with age, when the skin does not retract. Often, people are bothered by thighs that rub together or cause discomfort when walking or doing physical activity. Some people just want firmer thighs, but others also experience chafing on the inside of their thighs.
Excess skin often occurs when you undergo significant weight loss or after major liposuction. Although the skin retracts somewhat on its own, excess skin is often left behind. Unfortunately, it is not possible to exercise away excess skin, but there are various treatments you can use.
There are different methods for thigh lift surgery, either a vertical thigh lift that leaves a scar on the inside of the thigh, or a horizontal thigh lift that leaves a scar in the groin. This can also be combined with a short scar down the thigh. The length of the scar depends on how much skin is to be removed.
The treatment you need depends on your unique case. During a consultation at Nordstrandklinikken , our surgeon Nordstrandklinikken assess your situation and give you their recommendations.
Removal of excess skin with thigh lift
If you are bothered by large amounts of excess skin that does not retract, it may be necessary to remove the skin with thigh plastic surgery. Thigh plastic surgery is a surgical procedure in which excess skin from the groin to the knee is removed. After massive weight loss, if it causes physical discomfort, the procedure can be performed VAT-free.
A method is used to test how much skin can be safely removed, and this is then removed. Afterwards, the area is sutured using plastic surgery techniques with self-dissolving thread. A compression stocking is then applied. After the procedure, you will remain in the recovery room until you are well enough to go home, usually after a few hours.
Liposuction
Most patients have a combination of excess skin and fat. The surgical procedure is therefore often combined with liposuction of the inner thighs. Liposuction is performed through small incisions in the skin, which leave insignificant scars.
Do you think you need less extensive treatment than thigh plastic surgery? If you only have fat and no excess skin, it is usually sufficient to perform liposuction on the inner thighs. The skin will then retract somewhat.
If there is a lot of fat on the inner thighs, liposuction alone may result in excess skin if the skin does not retract. A growing group of patients are those who have previously undergone liposuction and whose skin has not retracted after the procedure. There are also some non-surgical methods for tightening the skin. These can be somewhat more unpredictable in terms of how much tightening they provide, but they do not leave scars. During a consultation at Nordstrandklinikken , our surgeon Nordstrandklinikken assess which treatment is best for your situation.
What is included in the price?
The price you pay for an operation includes all follow-up checks you would need after an operation. We are available to all our patients and want them to have the safest experience throughout the entire process.
As with any major surgery, all medications and supplements that increase the risk of bleeding should be stopped 2 weeks before the operation. See our list of medications and dietary supplements you should avoid. As always, be sure to check with your doctor before stopping any medication. If you smoke or use snuff, you must stop 6-8 weeks before surgery, depending on the type of surgery you are having.
Blood-thinning medication, anti-inflammatory drugs, and salicylic acid preparations must not be used 7 days prior to surgery. It is important that you are healthy during the week of your surgery. If you have any symptoms of illness, please contact the clinic so that we can schedule a new date. Surgery should not be performed when you have symptoms of illness.
Before the operation, you will be given a prescription for medication, with information about which tablets to take.
On the day of the operation, you must fast for 6 hours before the operation. It is also important that you do not chew gum or lozenges, use snuff or smoke. You should not use perfume, deodorant or makeup—and piercings and nail polish must be removed.
It is always a priority for us that you feel well cared for with the very best expertise, in safe and comfortable surroundings. You will be welcomed by a nurse who will go through a checklist with you. You will also meet our anesthesia staff who will look after you during the operation.
You will then see the surgeon for a consultation and preoperative discussion. During the operation, you will be given general anesthesia and a large amount of local anesthesia to limit pain. The operation itself takes approximately 3 hours. After the operation, you will be monitored by our nurses and will remain in bed for at least 1 hour after the operation is complete. You will be given food, drink, and painkillers as needed.
During the first 24 hours after surgery, you must stay with another person and spend the night near the clinic. If you have any questions, our on-call telephone service is available around the clock. On the evening of the operation, our plastic surgeon will also call patients to check how they are doing and provide any information they may need. Pain levels vary greatly from person to person. During this time, you will also be able to take painkillers that are prescribed before the operation. After a week, you will be able to move around more, but you should still take it easy for the first two weeks.
After the procedure, the area is bandaged with Micropore tape, sterile bandages, and a compression stocking. After 4 days, you can shower and remove any bandages, but not the paper tape over the wound itself. It is normal for there to be some bleeding in the stocking and some fluid from the wound during the first week. The tape is dried with a hair dryer before the stockings are put back on. Internal stitches are used, which dissolve on their own after 3-6 months.
Thigh lift surgery leaves a scar on the inside of the thighs and in the groin. The length of the scar varies, depending on how much excess skin has been removed. We use multi-layer sutures, which dissolve on their own. After one week, you will have a follow-up appointment at the clinic. After a week, you can move around more, but you should still take it easy for the first two weeks and avoid heavy lifting for the first four weeks. You will need to wear compression garments around the clock for three weeks and during the day for another three weeks.
Taping should be continued as long as the scars are red and for at least 3-4 months. After the operation, you must wear compression garments around the clock for three weeks, and then during the day for another three weeks. This will ensure the best possible result. After one week, you will have a check-up at the clinic.
